There has been a congregation of worshipping Christians on the site in the centre of Olney since the 17th century, when the church met in a repurposed barn. We have historic connections back to a number of influential leaders including John Sutcliff and William Carey who established the Baptist Missionary Society. Whilst thankful for our heritage our focus is on the here and now and our relationship with a living God.

Our members include Christians from a range of traditions and backgrounds including those who are new to their journey of faith. All ages are represented within our congregation and a range of activities provided to develop faith and connect with the wider community.
Our core purpose is set out in the church mission statement,
‘We are a Baptist Church family that loves God and reaches out to the world, to make effective disciples for Jesus Christ.’
Olney Baptist Church is part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. One of the things that distinguishes Baptists from many other Christian denominations is the practice of believer’s baptism. This public act follows a personal decision to turn from a life based on ourselves to one where Jesus is Saviour and Lord. Attending a baptism is a good way of seeing what this means.
We believe God the Father made the world and provides for us. We believe his Son Jesus Christ came to earth to teach us God’s ways and show us God’s love. Jesus died so we can be forgiven and be put right with God; he rose from the dead so we can have new life and be certain of heaven. We believe in the Holy Spirit who makes us part of God’s family and helps us share Jesus with those we meet.
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God which provides guidance to help us grow as Christians.
We consider that life is a journey, one we can make either towards God or away from him. As Christians we have become aware of and accepted God’s undeserved grace for us in Jesus.
Wherever you are on your journey of faith, or even if it hasn’t begun yet, we would love to share your journey with you.
